DVLA V765 Scheme – reclaim an original UK registration number

The DVLA V765 scheme is the official process for reuniting a classic vehicle with its original UK registration number when that number is not currently live on the DVLA system, or where a vehicle has previously been registered under an age-related number and you are applying to reinstate the original mark. The crucial requirement is documentary evidence that links the registration mark to the vehicle identity.

The British Lambretta Archive is now on the DVLA V765/1 owners’ club list, which means we can endorse V765 applications under the scheme rules where the evidence supports it.

When do you use V765?

V765 is used when a vehicle was once UK-registered (or is believed to have been) but the registration is now dormant, missing, or not present on modern DVLA records; or when you are trying to retain/reclaim the original mark rather than accept an age-related number.

What’s involved in the V765 process?

1) Evidence first

The backbone of a successful V765 application is acceptable evidence linking the registration mark to the vehicle. Typical examples include an original RF60/VE60 log book, period council register extracts, or other pre-1983 documentation that ties the mark to the chassis/frame number. Copies are usually safer to send than originals.

2) Forms and supporting documents

You’ll complete the V765 form, and depending on your circumstances you may also need additional DVLA forms for first registration or changes to an existing record. You’ll also include a recent photograph showing the vehicle complete.

3) Owners’ club endorsement (that’s where we come in)

Under the scheme, the V765 application needs to be endorsed by an owners’ club on DVLA’s V765/1 list. We will review what you have, confirm the vehicle identity from the numbers supplied, and endorse the application where appropriate.

4) DVLA review and outcome

DVLA will assess the application and evidence. If accepted, the original registration number is normally reissued on a non-transferable basis and a V5C is produced. If the evidence does not meet the scheme standard, DVLA may decline the original mark and instead allocate an age-related registration where you can prove date of manufacture, or a Q registration in some cases.
