Authentication Tool – Frequently Asked Questions
This page addresses common questions and points of confusion encountered when using the Authentication Tool. It explains why certain results appear as they do and directs users to the relevant documentation where detailed explanations are provided.
Why does my number fall outside the stated range?
This usually reflects the limits of surviving factory documentation rather than an error. Where numbers fall just outside documented boundaries, interpretation is conservatively assigned to the nearest verifiable production period.
Known limitations and edge cases are documented separately within the Tool documentation.
Why does the result change when I select a different prefix?
Prefixes define the numbering system under which a number was issued. Selecting a different prefix applies a different documented sequence and therefore a different production context.
Why does the result change when I select the factory mechanical designation option?
Some models were produced in more than one mechanically distinct factory configuration while sharing the same frame and engine numbering sequence. In these cases, the mechanical designation cannot be determined from numbering alone.
Where this condition exists, the Authentication Tool allows an explicit mechanical designation to be declared. When selected, the result is classified under the corresponding factory mechanical designation and engine capacity, and the output records that this classification is based on user declaration.
This does not represent a modification or conversion. It reflects a documented factory ambiguity where numbering evidence alone is insufficient to distinguish mechanically different designations.
Prefix systems are explained in detail within the Prefixes & Numbering documentation.
Why do my frame and engine dates differ?
Frame and engine components were not always produced or allocated at the same time. Engines could be built earlier, later, or replaced during service.
The Authentication Tool reports frame and engine interpretations independently rather than forcing artificial alignment.
Why is the frame date treated as primary?
Frame numbers provide the most consistent indicator of production sequence across models. Where a single production period must be referenced, frame-based interpretation is prioritised.
How this decision is applied is described within the Authentication Tool methodology.
Why doesn’t my model appear in the Authentication Tool?
Models are included only where sufficient verified production data exists to support reliable interpretation.
Absence from the tool indicates a lack of defensible data, not that a vehicle is invalid.
Can the Authentication Tool determine an exact build date?
No. The Authentication Tool classifies vehicles within documented production periods. It does not determine exact calendar dates of manufacture.
The distinction between production reality and administrative dates is defined within the Scope & Use documentation.
Why is the final production month sometimes assigned?
Where detailed monthly data does not survive but an overall production range is known, numbers falling late in that range are conservatively assigned to the final recorded production period.
This avoids speculative precision and reflects accepted archival practice.
Is the Authentication Tool result definitive?
Results represent the most accurate interpretation supported by surviving factory evidence. They are repeatable and transparent, but remain subject to the limits of the historical record.
Formal authority is provided only through authenticated certificates issued separately by the British Lambretta Archive.
