Production Data

Authentication Tool

How the Tool Works

Step 1: Choose a vehicle type and model

Selecting a vehicle type and model limits the search to the correct family of machines. Only historically valid frame and engine numbering systems are made available.

The tool is built using original Innocenti factory Chiusura a consuntivo produzione records. A detailed explanation of these production records, and how they differ from derived production data, can be found in the Italian Frame Information reference section.

Step 2: Select frame and engine prefixes

Frame and engine numbers were issued under multiple prefix systems. By choosing the correct prefix, you define which numbering system applies.

Some models were produced in multiple factory configurations. Where applicable, a variant option will appear allowing the result to be interpreted using the correct production records.

Prefix systems are explained in detail in Prefixes & Numbering Systems.

Step 3: Enter numbers and view results

Entered numbers are matched against documented production data to determine the most accurate production period supported by surviving factory records.

The rules governing this process are defined in the VIN Search Methodology.

Step 4: Official Authentication Letters

The Authentication Tool provides an evidence-based interpretation of frame and engine numbers using documented Innocenti factory production records. It is designed to inform research, restoration, and historical understanding.

An official British Lambretta Archive - Authentication Letter is a separate, formal service. These letters are manually reviewed, issued on request, and supplied as signed documentation for use with authorities such as the DVLA, HMRC, insurers.

Details of the British Lambretta Archive authentication service, including how official letters are issued, can be found in the Authentication section.

Note: In extremely rare cases your number precedes the specified initial frame or engine number it would be classified within the first month of production. If your number is later than the suggested final frame or engine number, this is not unusual. It would be classified within the final month of recorded production for that model or series.

Date of manufacture is most accurately determined by frame number sequences. However, under certain conditions a build date may be more accurately inferred from an engine number depending on model.
